Search Engine Ranking - Anchor Text Is The Key

Try an Experiment

If you have a web site, try this experiment when you have some spare time. Pick a nonsense phrase, like “bed happy meatball” or anything equally silly. Make sure it’s something very unlikely to appear on a web page anywhere, and make sure it’s a phrase (not a single word). Also, make sure it does not appear on your own site.

Next, get a few friends or co-workers with web sites of their own to post a link to your site using that exact phrase (without the quotation marks) as the anchor text. What’s anchor text, you ask? It’s simply the word or words that form the clickable part of a link.

Now, wait a while. Make a note to yourself to check your web site’s ranking in the results for a search of your chosen nonsense phrase at a major search engine in a month or two. Unless you picked a phrase that actually appears on other sites, you’ll find that your site is #1! Moreover, that’s in spite of the fact that the chosen phrase does not appear anywhere on your actual web site. Think about that.

An infamous, large-scale example of this same test involved the phrase “miserable failure.” Some enterprising bloggers got together a few years ago and decided to link lots of sites to the official biography page for President George W. Bush at the whitehouse.gov site. The goal, of course, was to make that page show up in the #1 position whenever unsuspecting (or in this case, many suspecting) searchers typed in that phrase. It worked. (Side note: at last check, Michael Moore – famous film maker and Bush detractor, was in the #2 position at Google for this same search). Again, keep in mind that the phrase “miserable failure” does not appear anywhere on either man’s web site.

Is There a Point?

OK, so why bother with this seemingly asinine experiment (that’s actually been dubbed ‘Googlebombing’)? Ahh, Grasshopper, for the lesson it imparts. Which is? Well, it points to the power of anchor text in determining search engine ranking. And it has definite relevance to your activities as a webmaster.

Many of your fellow site owners - including a lot of them who run sites in direct competition with yours – have never heard of anchor text. Some of you reading this may be unfamiliar with it. But, as should be clear now, anchor text plays a major role in search engine ranking positions.

In basic terms, it works like this…

Search engines rely on links to help them ascertain both the theme of a given web site and its popularity. Knowing that, consider two scenarios. In the first, your site has built up a lot of links pointing to it, and each one has your domain name as the clickable part of the link (anchor text). Let’s say your domain name is your company’s name, JoeSmithBakery.com – and you sell baking supplies. OK, great – now your site will show up in the #1 position at the search engines whenever anyone searches for your domain name! Hmm. Think that one through. If they know your domain name, why would they need a search engine to find it?

In the second scenario, you have lots of links pointing to your bakery site, but instead of the domain name as the anchor text, you wisely chose a phrase that lots of people search for, like ‘baking supplies.’

Easy question: which would you prefer – being #1 at Google when people search for your domain name or being #1 when people search for bakery supplies? This is why the anchor text you choose for the links you build is so important.

A Plan of Action

Now, here’s a simple plan of action to improve your site’s link situation and search engine ranking going forward from this day…

Step 1 – Research Keywords

A great service is provided by the folks at wordtracker.com. They catalog search activity at the major engines, and then make available those numbers to the general public. You simply type in a word or phrase related to your site’s theme, and wordtracker shows you the number of times that entry is being searched at the major search engines. Cool, huh? The service will also give you a list of related terms, so you can look for other important search words to target.

Step 2 – Pick a Few and Get Some Links

Compile a list of several search terms that are most closely related to your site’s theme and that get searched for often. It’s up to you, of course, but you should pick those phrases that get a few hundred to several thousand searches. These will be the terms you use in the anchor text of the inbound links you build from now on. Doing so will really increase your site’s search engine traffic - once all your new links begin to boost your rankings.

Nothing Else Changes

Now, just carry on with your usual link building activities: reciprocal links, one-way links from directories and article distributions, etc. The only change is to make sure you choose a phrase from your list to use as the clickable part of the link you ask for (the anchor text). If you rotate your choices, your site will move up in the rankings for each phrase. The only downside is that you’ll be getting fewer links per phrase, so it may take longer for any single phrase to rank high.

Keep in mind that the phrases you pick will be popular, unlike those in the examples that began this article. To score high rankings, you’ll need to be diligent and get lots of links. Never stop! Over time, this strategy will really help your site’s traffic, but it does take time. As the famous poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, famously wrote: “All good things come to those who wait.”

If you run one or more web sites, you’ve probably heard it said many times: “Content is king!” The thinking goes something like this: if you provide lots of high quality content on your web pages, it will attract lots of visitors who will buy from you and spread the word to others. You’ll end up ‘king of the hill’ in your particular niche.

Let’s examine that notion a little more closely. For existing sites that already have listings in search engines, links on related sites, directory listings, etc., content is the thing that brings visitors back for more. If, however, you have a brand new web site, using a domain name that has not been previously used, what’s wrong with this picture? Simply put, it’s this: the best content in the world won’t get you visitors if people don’t know your site exists.

The Power of Link Popularity

That’s where the equally important power of links comes into the picture. The web’s foundation is the interlinking of web sites. Without links, every site would be a tiny island in a huge ocean that isn’t on any map. At no time is this fact more starkly evident than when you unveil a new site on a new domain. We’ve all been there. Not only does your new site get zero traffic, you can’t even hear crickets chirping – even they don’t know it’s there!

The solution, of course, is to let people know you’re out there by building link popularity. What’s ‘link popularity,’ you ask? It is the sum total of external web pages with links pointing to your site. This includes all the sites most webmasters target: search engines, directories, related sites, and unrelated sites.

As your site’s link popularity grows, two great things happen. First, all those links on other sites begin to drive visitors to your site. If most of those links are on sites in the same niche as your own, most of those visitors will be pre-screened. In other words, they will be people with an interest in your niche’s subject matter – not random visitors.

Second, link popularity plays a significant role in determining where your site will rank at the major search engines for searches related to your site’s theme. As you amass more inbound links, and depending on the words used in those links, your site will move up the rankings and you’ll see more and more traffic. Just as with links on related sites, this ‘organic’ (i.e., free) search engine traffic will consist of people who are actively seeking out your site’s information. Those are the visitors you must have to succeed! Best of all, you get those visitors without having to pay one penny for them!

The Power of Great Content

Once you have a steady flow of visitors surfing in to your site, the focus changes to the quality of the content they find there. Why? Because you want as many of those first-time visitors as possible to be impressed enough by what they find on your web site to bookmark it and spread the word to family, friends, and co-workers. You can’t buy better advertising than word-of-mouth from trusted sources like that!

Of course, great content will also encourage a higher percentage of your visitors to buy from you – your products, services, paid memberships, etc. Put it all together and it’s clear that excellent content will both make you more money and get your site more link popularity. It’s like an endless feedback loop that builds and builds as your site ages.

Why Successful Site Owners Concentrate on Both

But, the key in the beginning, when you’ve got a brand new site on your hands, is growing link popularity. Get that trickle of traffic started with those links; then let your great content do the lion’s share of the work to close the deal.

The growth of your site will constantly revolve around its dependence on content and links. Those who have made the comment, “Content is king!” a widely known catch phrase have really done a disservice to new site owners. A much more accurate (but less catchy) phrase is this one: “Content and links share the kingdom.”

One of the raging debates among web site publishers and SEO types is the tug-of-war between writing web site content for actual human visitors vs. the search engine spiders. Basically, it boils down to a question of impressing readers or making search engines happy so they’ll send you more traffic.

Well, here’s a novel concept: DO BOTH!

It’s really not difficult to walk the tightrope if you do some research first. We all want to write compelling content that will grab a reader’s attention and hold it. But, to get any readers in the first place, you need to provide content that people actually search to find. Hate to be the one to break it to you, but if you’re an expert on a rare bird that maybe 100 people in the world have ever heard of, all the writing you do online about it will go virtually unseen.

That’s the conundrum, in a nutshell. Fortunately, there’s a pretty simple solution. It’s called keyword research. Sounds boring, doesn’t it? Well, does it perk you up a bit to learn that spending a couple of hours doing it can be the difference between having a web site that collects dust and one that collects bucks? Thought it might.

What you want to do is build a list of keywords (single words and phrases) that are closely related to the theme of your site, then write a page of content full of information about each keyword. One keyword per page.

Now, here’s the key to it all. Don’t just pull a list out of the air (or, in this case, your own brain). Why not? Because the keywords you come up with may or may NOT be words that are actually searched for at the major search engines. You need to know for sure. In fact, knowing for sure is what separates a lot of successful niche web site owners from the masses of others who scratch their heads in puzzlement when their sites get very little free traffic.

Wordtracker is a Godsend

So, how can you find out which keywords that are related to your site’s theme are searched for and which are not? Suffice to say, there are several options, but the best is a service found at wordtracker.com. These fine folks compile massive amounts of data about the words searchers at the major engines type in when they search. Then they present this data in a straightforward, easy-to-read format that you can check quickly as you build your keyword lists.

You simply go there, armed with a basic idea of which keywords to check out, and wordtracker will give you a thumbs up or thumbs down on each one by telling you how many times each keyword has been searched. It can be very eye-opening. You’ll likely discover that some of your most cherished keywords are virtually worthless from a search engine traffic standpoint. You’ll quickly learn to check your assumptions at the door when you enter wordtracker’s site!

OK, once you’ve built a working list of keywords that you now know get used a lot by searchers at the major search engines, you’ll be way ahead of most of your competitors. The only remaining step is to write some high quality, informative, useful content about each keyword in your list and post it on your site. Remember: one keyword (which can be a single word or a phrase) per page!

If you make your content easy to read and chock full of interesting information, you’ll satisfy both elements mentioned at the beginning of this article. Your visitors will get great content, which will bring them back and convince some of them to link to your site. And, you’ll have built that content around keywords that are actually being searched for at the big engines. More searches = more traffic. It’s that simple.

You’ll have a web site that pulls in more and more free search engine traffic as you continue to add content built around your keyword list. Once on your site, your visitors will find information that interests them and, hopefully, compels them to bookmark your site, tell their friends and co-workers, and maybe even give you a link on their own sites!

That, my friends, is how you win at the web site game. As logical as this all sounds, very few of your competitors understand it, let alone actually do it. So, get to it! They’ll be eating your site’s dust while you collect all the bucks!

Link Exchange: A Better Way For 2006

While traditional link exchanges still hold some value, it may be time to add a different tactic to your link-building arsenal. Why? Because it appears that swapping links doesn’t provide quite as much ‘oomph!’ for moving up in the search engine rankings as it used to, at least not for sites in highly competitive niches. Many sites that were on the first page of results and relied heavily on exchanging links have lost those coveted positions after recent search engine updates (especially the ‘Jagger’ update at Google).

Disclaimer: Only employees who are in the know at the search engines can say with certainty which factors determine rankings. The decrease in link exchange benefit is speculation based on testing and some consensus among ‘experts’ outside of the engines.

Build More One-Way Links

Assuming that it’s true about link exchanges becoming an obsolete way to get higher search engine rankings, it’s wise to find ways to build one-way inbound links. At the very least, no web site owner should rely completely on one form of link gathering. It’s never smart to put all of one’s eggs in the same basket, after all.

The rub here is that most site owners still pursue link swaps as their ‘bread-and-butter’ means of building links. That can play against you in your own link strategy if you don’t continue to offer exchanges. What to do?

What you need is a sort of hybrid approach. That is, find a way to appeal to the barter mindset of exchanging something of value for something else of value that most web site owners have ingrained in their modes of thinking. Along those lines, here’s a great way to continue building links without swapping them: offer original, unique content in exchange for a one-way link.

Trade Content for Links Instead

Here’s how it works...

Instead of offering to exchange links on your links page, write a short notice that you will write a few hundred words of original, exclusive content (300-500 is plenty) that the other site owner may use on his or her site. In exchange, they must post a link to your site on either their home page or another important page that is linked directly from the home page. Make it clear that your link must not appear on their links page, where it would just share space with many others. For the value to be equal, your link should get special handling in exchange for that great page of new content.

Now, expect not to get too many takers at this stage. The link exchange notion is pretty ingrained in most site owners. That being the case, there’s another part of this strategy you should definitely pursue.

Be proactive! Seek out related sites from which you’d love to have a link, and approach the site owner or webmaster with an offer to write a page of high quality content in exchange for a return link. We’ve been following this strategy for months with our network of sites and the results are impressive! You can expect a much higher rate of agreement from this approach than the tired old “I love your site! let’s exchange links!” routine, which is increasingly too time consuming to be worth the effort.

Some Important Points

First, follow through and write truly excellent content. Don’t just dash off a quick article that doesn’t convey useful and interesting information. Savvy web site owners will quickly refuse to post your link if you abuse the situation in this way.

Second, make the content you give away original and exclusive. This is your ‘hook’ – your best selling point. If you try to give a site owner the same content that appears somewhere else, you’ll lose a wonderful opportunity to get a great one-way link.

Perhaps the most important point of all is to use this strategy only with closely related sites that have high quality content. Be picky! Start by checking out the top ranked sites in your niche. Search Google or another major search engine to get a list of the top sites, then visit each one and, if you deem it worthy, find their contact information and send a short, polite inquiry to see if they are interested in an exchange of content for a link back to your site.

When other site owners approach you from the notice on your links page - again, be picky. You’ll be spending some of your valuable time to write them a page of high quality content. You will want a high quality link in return. If a site does not meet your high standards, take a pass. In all cases, if you agree to the content-for-link exchange, always request a link from their home page. It’s the best possible place for your link and, at worst, the other site owner will refuse and suggest a different page. It can’t hurt to ask!

Ultimately, the real long-term value in following this link-building strategy is the return on your investment of time. The relatively short amount of time you invest in writing the content you give away may produce dividends in traffic and higher search engine rankings that last for years. Viewed from that perspective, doesn’t this make good sense?

Three Little Known Tips For Keyword Optimization

When a user enters a search term, or keyword phrase, at a search engine, regardless of whether it is Google, MSN, Yahoo! or AltaVista, the engine runs through the billions of pages in its database and awards each page a "relevancy score". The higher the score, the higher the listing will appear on the results page. If your site doesn’t contain the keyword used by the searcher, the only score it’s going to get is a zero. Your first task then is to make sure you know which keywords are most relevant for each of your sites.

There are three ways to figure out which keywords work the best for your particular site:

1. Check Your Competitors
2. Check the pay-per-clicks
3. Use specialized tools

Checking your competitors is the easy way to find out what ranks them higher than you for your particular niche. Simply do a search on one of the search engines for your best keyword, and go to the top five sites on the results page. When visiting, check the page source by going to View-> Page Source. This will open up the HTML file of the site you are visiting. In the head portion of the page (it'll be the first thing you'll see) look for the phrase "meta=keywords content="their keywords here" (It will be enclosed in ) and this will give you a list of their top keywords. Keywords should be listed in this meta tag with the highest ranking keyword first. One very big advantage of doing this research is that it gives you an idea of how your competitors have optimized their pages, and if not done properly, you have the advantage in doing your own pages in the proper fashion.

Checking the pay-per-click sites such as Overture or FindWhat will also let you see what keywords people are bidding on. The downside is that they require you to open an account, and it may cost a few dollars, but it is worth the extra expense to be able to check bids on PPC. Googlefight is also a good resource to find which of two keywords are more relevant. Although limited in use, it is rather fun to play with, and gives relevant reports.

Specialized tools are the best way to check keywords for popularity and competition. Wordtracker, a paid subscription site, is an invaluable resource for researching top keywords. At $250 USD a year, it is not cheap, but the time saved and excellent returns are worth the investment. Wordtracker has a free trial search that can be used, although it is somewhat limited in return of relevant keyword phrases. You can also purchase a subscription for monthly, weekly, and daily. Daily fees are about $8 USD, and is a worthwhile investment. A lot of research can be done in 1 day, and if you are prepared with basic keyword brainstorming, you can get a lot done in a day's time.

As you build your keyword list from your root keyword, be mindful that when people search for product to buy, they generally use two to three phrase search terms. If they are doing research, they will search with the root word. For example if I wish to research "flowers" then that is the term I will input into the search engines. If, however, I am looking to purchase, I would use the term "buy red roses" or "buy cheap bouquets". With careful planning and taking the proper amount of time to research root keywords, you can be successful with the proper optimization of your web pages.

Use flashy technology (JavaScript, Flash, Streaming Audio/Video, animation) sparingly and only if it is imperative to your presentation.

2. Target your Market

Know who your market is and make certain that your site caters to their needs. It is critical that your site reflect the values of your potential customers. Is your market mostly business professionals? If so, the site must be clean and professional. Is your product aimed at teenagers and young adults? Then your site could be more informal and relaxed. The key is to know your market and build the site to their preferences.

3. Focus the Site

Make certain your web site is focused on the goal of selling your product or service. If your business offers many products, dedicate a unique page for each instead of trying to sell them all from one page. This can easily be accomplished through the utilization of subdomains.

4. Build Credibility

The most professionally designed site won't sell if your customers don't believe in you. Become an authority in your chosen niche. The internet is all about information, not just marketing. People go to the internet to find information on a particular subject. Providing clear concise articles focused on the subject of your site makes you an expert in your field. Make sure the site is consistent in look, feel and design. Nothing is more jarring and disturbing to a customer than feeling as if they have just gone to another site. Keep colors and themes constant throughout the site.

7. Make your site interactive and personalized

Make your website interactive. Add feedback forms as well as email forms that allow your prospective customers to ask you any questions they might have pertaining to a product. Personalization of your website is another key element that can lead to customer delight and can increase your sales. Personalization technology provides you the analytic tools to facilitate cross-selling and up-selling when the customer is buying online. The most important aspect of tracking visitors to your website is analyzing all the statistics you get from your tracking software. The three main statistics that will show your overall progress are hits, visitors and page views. Hits are tracked when any picture or page loads from your server on to a visitor's browser. Hits, however, can be very misleading. It is quite an irrelevant statistic for your website.

The statistic that is probably the most important for a website is Page Views/Visitors. This gives you a good indication of two things. First, how many people are coming to your site, and secondly how long are they staying on your site. If you have 250 visitors and 300 page views you can figure that most visitors view one page on your site and then leave. Generally, if you're not getting 2 page views per visitor then you should consider upgrading your site's content so your visitors will stay around longer.

If you see the number of visitors you have increasing as well as the number of page views per visitor increasing then keep up the good work! Always look for this stat as an overall barometer of how your site design is going and if your marketing campaigns are taking hold.

Also, a good stat to look for is unique visitors. Once a person visits your site they will not be added to the unique visitors' category if they visit again. This is a good way to track new visitors to your website.

Page views are a good indication of how "sticky" your website is. A good statistic to keep is Page Views divided by the number of Visitors you have. This statistic will give you a good idea if your content is interesting and if your visitors are staying on your site for a long time and surfing.

Some people are intimidated by web traffic statistics (mostly because of the sheer volume of data available), but they shouldn't be. While there are many highly specialized statistics that can be used for more in-depth web traffic analysis, the above areas alone can provide invaluable information on your visitors and your website performance. Remember- this data is available for a reason. It's up to you to use it.

Easy Tips To Avoid Google Click Fraud

Many web site owners are getting their Google Adsense account terminated. I read on the forums almost daily posts from people who are bemoaning the fact that Google has terminated their account when they feel they have done nothing wrong to deserve the punishment. In almost every case, click fraud is the reason for termination.

Click fraud is the act of clicking on ads for the purpose of costing the advertiser money. It is simply the same as paying out cash for false leads. Many website owners are aware of this fraud, and share the same sentiment that this is the one big problem that Adsense is facing.

How do you prevent yourself from being involved in this fraud?

The majority of web hosts offer access logs. If you are notified of click fraud and possible termination of your account by Google, it is necessary that you hand over these logs to them to clarify your situation. This allows them to look for any suspicious activity on your site. Problems like this are very serious and giving it to them is a show of good faith that you want to help Google in any way you can to attempt to solve the problem.

It can also help if you have a click monitoring software. There are many good programs available, but it is important that you get a program that has no limitations. there are free programs available, but I would suggest that you get a script from a certified expert in this field. I highly recommend using William Bontrager's script, available at http://bontragercgi.com/programs/clickwatch. Mr Bontrager will install this script on one site for you after the purchase of the software, and will show you how to add the script to other sites. Free scripts are also available on the Internet if you are limited in funds. Remember, you get what you pay for. As usual, all the information you will receive from your tracking software should be turned over to Google. This is showing Google that you too are fighting against click frauds and is in no way a part of it.

Study your server logs and watch for any activity that seems suspicious. Report anything that you may find odd, may it big or small thing. Look for large spikes in traffic, and suspicious activity in files and folders where people would not normally have access to. Remember, that when working on your site, that you will access these files and folders. It is suggested you track these by noting the time of activity. A little work on your part will save you a lot of grief in the long run.

You may want to consider disabling ads for your own IP address and local geographic area. This will certainly prevent accidents and will not make Google mistake another user as you. You can do through the htaccess file on your web site. the process is too detailed to go into further here, but if you do a search on the engines to learn ways to access and disable portions of this log, a lot of information is readily available. By doing this, and showing Google that you have done so, you protect yourself against any possible threat from Google.

Keep your Adsense off on pop ups and pop unders. Your ads should not be displayed on content sites that promote illegal activity or tampering of the legal rights of other people or business. Included in this are the content that is considered adult or gambling in nature, or promote firearms, tobacco, or drugs of any kind. If you think that you may be breaking this rule, immediately remove your content or Adsense from the web page.

Be truthful and confess up to Google about times when you might have clicked on your own ads, whether accidentally or intentionally. Be honest about anything that you may have done that is wrong. Confessing is way better than Google learning about it eventually. It would mean eventual termination and no getting back what you have worked so hard for.

Do not tell your family or friends about Adsense on your website. Chances are they may start clicking on them to help you make money without you knowing it. They may be doing more harm to you than help by trying it in the first place.

Most pay per click networks have different measures in hand to protect website owners against click frauds. Other search engines can track more than 50 data points, IP address, browser’s information, user’s session info and pattern recognition. They also have “systems” available that detects fraud, not to mention the specialized teams monitoring how things are going and helping advertisers stop click frauds. Google has some of the best brains in the business, and it does no one any good to try to "fool" them. In addition to the algorithms that Google has in place, they also employ regular people to surf the net to find illegal sites.

Google offers suggestion on how to avoid click fraud. Using “negative keywords” can be used to keep your Adsense showing on products and services that are in no way related to yours. Add tracking URLs to your links so you can track the traffic coming from Google.

Don't be caught in the Google click fraud. The opportunity to make a very decent income is readily available if you use common sense, do not try to cheat Google, and follow their Terms of Service. If you do these things, maybe some day you too can be a member of the FedEx Club!

OK I know I’m not the first to announce this but let’s face it boys and girls SEO (search engine optimisation) as we currently know it is dead. It’s time to ditch those antiquated techniques that all SEOs cling on to and focus your online marketing efforts on 'online brand optimisation' – OBO for short!

So what’s the difference between SEO and OBO?

Think about the searcher not the search engine!

From a strategic perspective online brand optimisation (OBO) is all about optimising your site and online marketing efforts for the searcher, the end-user that seeks out your site via whatever means he or she chooses. Whether it is via a search engine, a content portal or even a forum. Your goal is to deliver what you’ve promised and help that searcher fulfil his or her online goal. If you don’t do that then you’ve failed in achieving your key online objective.

Ranking’itis!

SEO for most seasoned optimisers is about getting to the top of Google. The vast majority of SEOs become obsessed with checking their rankings in the SERPS (search engine results pages) on a daily basis and even across every possible Google data centre (DC). Checking rankings soon becomes an addiction for many SEOs and believe you me I know, I have been there. But I did come to my senses and I’ve realised that there is more to life than being no 1 in Google for a plethora of key phrases. I’ve also realised that in today’s search environment you can’t rely on the search engine to always deliver you targeted prospects that convert.

You may have read about the multitude of search marketers that have recently been hit badly by the Google ‘Jagger’ update. For many, their site has completely dropped out of the rankings and as a result they are now in an extremely vulnerable position. They solely relied on Google to drive visitors to their site and with no new prospects coming in; their business is starting to feel the strain of being dumped into the harsh terrain that I like to call the ‘Google Desert!’ As we all know no one ventures out onto page 127 of the search results!

Build a brand (a bit of a no-brainer!)

So what can they do to help rectify this? The best solution for many of them will be to clean up their site, create new compelling content, get rid of any unrelated link partners and focus their strategy on building a respected brand, not on building top positions in search sites. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that good search engine visibility isn’t an important element of any online marketing campaign. I’m just saying that it shouldn’t be the only one and it should not drive your overall strategy, it should just simply support it.

For your organic search engine market efforts to work they need to be interlinked with other non-search related activity. Search engines like Google are complex beasts and they analyse your site in so many different ways. They not only look at what content you have and who you link with but there is also evidence to suggest they measure other off-site factors such as how many mentions your site gets on other authority sites, how people interact with your site when they land on it and so on.

The simple fact of the matter is that if you want to do well in Google you need to build a strong online brand and that involves promoting your site using a multitude of online and offline channels not just search. Like I said everything is interlinked and if you have a site with a strong brand behind it then it will make its way to the top of Google.

Don’t get banished to the online desert

Building your business model around a search engine is very risky and not a smart thing to do. Why? Because you have no control over the search engine. If you solely rely on the search engine to provide you with leads and customers then you’re doing far worse than putting all your eggs in the one basket – you’ll end up in the online desert with tumbleweed blowing through your site. Remember search engines don’t owe you anything; they don’t care how great your site looks. What they do care about is what your target audience think and we all know that weak brands never make it to the top!

Adsense Or Yahoo Publisher?

Lately many of my customers have been asking me this question:

"Which program is better? Adsense or Yahoo Publisher?"
It sounds simple, but the answer is not. The reason being is that both programs work well, but both also have different places when considering whether or not to use them for a specific website.

Here's why.

Adsense has been around for a while now, and at the moment has the lion's share of the market in the PPC (Pay Per Click) game. But anyone who has been promoting them on their websites will tell you that the payouts have also gotten gradually smaller as time has gone on. Why? Well it's easy, they are still the best game in town, so they aren't worried about losing their publishers to another PPC.

But then came Yahoo Publisher. Which unless you've been living under a rock for the past ten years, you already know the name, and know how big that company is. And with the purchase of Overture, Yahoo is coming into the game well equipped and ready for a fight.

So, what's the difference between the two?

Here is what I've been able to learn from my own websites. Yahoo, overall, is paying more per click then Adsense. But before you jump from this article and start changing your code, read on a bit more.

Yahoo Publisher seems to be paying more then Adsense on similar content, BUT... Their ads are not nearly as contextually targeted as Adsense. So this can present a problem for website owners. For example, if you have a website that it's primary topic is 'HOME MORTGAGES', Adsense will display ads that only link to mortgage sites. But that's not true with Yahoo Publisher. Yahoo Publisher might display some mortgage ads, but also might display a Payday Loan ad (BTW if you need a payday loan, check out this page http://www.thegiftedone.com ), Vonage ads (Vonage must pay them some big money, as they seem to be the default when the script doesn't know what to do), or some other ad that does not relate to the content of your website.

How do you choose which program is right for your site? This depends on the site itself and the type of surfers that frequent it. If you have a site that is highly targeted for a certain keyword, then I would suggest you stay with Adsense. This will keep the ads focused and targeted to your customers, presenting them with content that they will click. If they came to read about cooking recipes, they probably won’t click the Vonage ad. Here’s an example of a content targeted website: http://voip.magicanswers.com

However, if your site is more of a surfer hangout, where people go when they are bored, or if your site covers a multitude of topics, then you might be better off loading it up with Yahoo Publisher ads. This type of surfer is more likely to click an ad that’s off topic, which in turn would pay you better.

At this point what it comes down to is the click thru ratio. If monitored closely, you can determine what your surfers like and what they don’t like. What they click and what they don’t click. If one program is not performing well for you, then try the other.

I’m sure that as time goes on, Yahoo Publisher will become more targeted, and surely will be more competitive. With Google’s Adsense as an adversary they have quite a fight on their hands. My advice to you is this. If you have one website, then optimize your PPC links for YOUR website surfers. If you have many, optimize each site accordingly, but do take the time to test each program. Find out which one will pay you more. Whether you own a giant corporation with hundreds of websites, or a home based business branching out to the internet, the bottom line is always the bottom line. Which comes down to the paycheck. A simple test might lead you to more money, which is always the goal.

How To Build Your Opt-In Mailing List

“The money is in the list.” This is one of the slogans of internet marketing experts who say that it is very important to build up an opt-in list and then make regular mailings which will enable you to sell your goods and services.

If you doubt this slogan, then you should consult with one of my close friends and colleagues. He has been quietly building his mailing list over the best three years. Recently he sent out a mailing to all his subscribers, asking them to help out with Hurricane Katrina relief work. He was astonished to see that immediately following the mailing the traffic to his website jumped ten-fold over a period of three days and counting. Not only did his traffic increase, his e-book sales and subscriptions to his new course went through the roof. And, there was not one word of a commercial pitch in his message to the list.

What is the secret of his success? Even he is scratching his head. But, really it is not a mystery. He runs several free auto-responder courses from his website, delivering high quality information on health and well-being, topics that are important to all of us. Because the content of his mailings is of a high standard, he has won the trust and confidence of thousands of people. This is what electronic marketers call “pre-selling”. Now, whenever he has something to say, his readers are eager to listen.

If you run a website and do not already have a mechanism for building up a list of interested readers, then you should consider doing it now. Here are a few ways to build your list.

1. Start a periodic newsletter with a subscription form on all the pages of your website.

However, if you want the kind of success that my friend had, you should write good articles, or get quality material from other writers and send it to your list on a regular basis. If you don’t know or don’t already have a mechanism for collecting addresses and mailing a newsletter, you can get a free or paid service from http://www.bravenet.com . More robust newsletter services are offered by Aweber, http://www.aweber.com and from www.topica.com .

2. Offer an auto-responder tutorial course on your website.

People come to the web to find solutions to their problems or answers to their questions. Write a series of how-to articles or information articles and offer them as a series that is sent automatically on a periodic basis whenever people subscribe. You can use an auto-responder service hosted by commercial companies or can, as my friend did, use a simple auto responder script installed on your own server. You can get cgi auto responder script for installation on your own server or if you don’t like installing scripts you can get one from Aweber.

3. Write a small e-book in PDF format and offer it as a free download in exchange for an email address

PDF documents are the industry-standard these days, and if you supply good information that is related to your field of activity, your web visitors will be more than happy to trade their email address for a free download. PDF downloads are also viral; people pass them along to their friends and if your information and links are in the e-book, you are likely to get a wide readership and generate sales from the circulation of the e-book.

4. Publish your articles on other websites and newsletters, mentioning your mailing list in your “resource box.”

One of the best ways to build your list is to get your articles published on other websites and in the electronic newsletters published by web masters in fields related to yours. At the end of these published articles you should put your author information (this is also known as a resource box) and include a hyperlink to your website and a mention that more of your articles are available in your newsletter and give a url where people can sign up for it.

One important thing to consider about list building is that whenever you are offering something, even if it is for free, you must sell it to your readers by describing what it is and how it will benefit them. You can’t succeed with a one-line sentence saying, “Sign up for our free newsletter.” If you have a newsletter, you should give a list of past articles. If you have satisfied subscribers, publish some testimonials.

Every day many people are visiting your website and some of them would like to know more about what you have to say and would like to hear from you on a periodic basis. Give them a chance, by using some of the list-building methods that I have described.

Make Your Website Talk: How To Install Streaming Audio On Your Site

One of the most important tasks in online selling, and indeed in all selling, is to convince the prospective buyer that you are someone who can be trusted. A nice picture of yourself in your “about” section is helpful, but even more convincing would be a heartfelt audio message in which you explain yourself and introduce your product or service.

If you are thinking that installing a sound capability on your website would be beyond your technical or financial means then I think you will change your mind after you finish reading this article.

There are some online services that provide full audio support but they charge monthly fees and this may be more than you want to invest. However, if you want to add sound with flash buttons to your site on a limited budget then there are several moderately priced downloadable software packages that allow you to do everything, without any technical know-how. They range in price from $40 to $100. Visit the websites of audiomakerpro.com, flashaudiowizard.com or soundstreamer.com, and you will see how these programs work.

Now, if you are like me, a real cheapskate, and you don’t want to spend any money at all but would like your website to talk, then you can use the following method to install a streaming audio file on your website.

First you have to record your message. I was able to use an old software package (CoolEditPro) to record an mp3 message directly on my computer. If you have an MP3 player with a recording capacity you can just record your message and then save it to your computer.

Suppose the message is saved as myintroduction.mp3. If you just upload the file to your server and make a link to that file, it will not stream but will download when someone clicks on the link. In order to make it stream you have to do the following. Open a text file and type one small piece of text: http://www.yourwebsite.com/myintroduction.mp3 (give the location where this file will be) then save this text file with a name such as audiointro.m3u . It is only a text file but it has an extension that makes it look like a sound file. Now, upload the actual audio file myintroduction.mp3 and the text file audiointro.m3u to your server.

In the place where you want someone to listen put a text link or a graphic button linked to the file audiointo.m3u . When someone clicks on this link they will hear the file myintroduction.mp3 streaming from their speakers. It will be played on the default MP3 player of that particular computer, such as Windows Media Player, Winamp, etc.

This is poor-person’s streaming audio, but it works. The advantage of the moderately priced packages or the higher priced audio services is that the buttons are nicer and have pause, stop and start functions.

Some audio services claim that adding audio to a website increases conversion rates by 300%. Audio is a tool, if you use it correctly it may indeed be just the thing you need to improve the performance of your website. So choose the method that is convenient for you and try it out.

Linking Strategy In The Post-Jagger Period

“Please take down my link.” I never thought I would live to see the day that I would get an email like this, but the latest Google update has caused some people to panic. This particular person thought that his site would be penalized if he had a link coming from a site in an unrelated field. Well, following the Jagger update how should we approach linking? Should we “nuke” our reciprocal links directories altogether? Or is there a sensible way to continue linking?
Google doesn’t explain the details of their updates and algorithm changes. It is widely thought they made moves to crack down on spamming and techniques designed to fool their indexing efforts. And possibly sites that added lots of irrelevant links in a short period were penalized. Google representatives have also stated publicly, in forums, that if you link to a “bad neighborhood” you could be penalized.

I can’t get inside the Google algorithm anymore than anyone else, but I strongly believe that linking should go on in a “natural” way, in a way that predates the linking craze which Google itself helped to create. Here are some elements of a natural linking strategy.

1. Link to the kinds of sites that will provide good resources for your web visitors.

This is actually the very idea behind Google’s system of Page Rank. Sites that are “cool”, that are informative and interesting will get “votes” or links from other sites on the basis of their value as a web resource. So, link to those sites that are worthy of being in your link directory.

2. Don’t link blindly just because someone is willing to give you a link in return.

Check out any site that is proposing a link exchange with you. Are they a possible spam site? A site that has no content and only ads, or a site in fields such as online gambling, pornography, or similar areas would be suspect. If the site has a page rank of 0 and also has none of its interior pages indexed by Google, then it may have been penalized. You can tell how many of its pages are indexed by making this search: site:www.suspectsite.com .

3. Link to those sites that cater to your target audience.

Stephen King, Radio Plays And Online Marketing

What do these 3 things have in common? It might seem a bit of a jump right now, but there is a link between the writer Stephen King, Radio plays of the fifties and internet marketing.... Words

Let me start from the beginning, I was reading "Danse Macabre" by Stephen King, a book in which he gives his take on horror fiction. In one section he is writing about the radio plays of the early 1950's, and how they gripped the listener by not giving you all the details.

The plays would have a background sound of a plane and the voice actors would set the scene they were in. The listener would build his own image of the plane and the problems the actors had, building his own sense of fear, and place himself there, that made it all the more scary, and built the drama for the listener. The main thing was, as radio is an aural only medium, the listener filled in the visual side for his or herself. The result was that they got a great thrill ride, just from words and sounds.

So that's Stephen King linked to the radio plays, so how do we get to internet marketing?

As I was reading about how successful the plays were on radio, because of the listeners imagination filling in the detail, I realised how we are trying to do the same as online marketers.

When we try to sell a product, we are using words to try to entice the website viewer into our little world, just like the radio plays did. We have to get the potential customer on our website to fill in the blanks, and visualise how our product will help him.

In the same way the best radio plays left out the complete description of what was happening and the listener filled in the blanks, we need to leave out some details, and let the viewer fill his own mind with the picture of how his problem will look from his particular perspective and how he'll feel when it's solved by our product.

Our sales pages need to draw the customer inside our world, but fill in the blanks from his own one. We need to pique his imagination just like those radio plays, and just like Stephen King does in his books, the most scary of which are the ones where the reader is left to make the monster real. In our case that monster is the perceived problem, and the hero, is you coming in the nick of time to fell the monster and save the day with your world beating product.

There are a lot of negative comments made about traffic exchanges, but is it all justified?

Probably the most common negative people give about using click exchange, or traffic exchange programs is that the traffic from them is useless. In many cases this is due to the way people try to make use of the traffic from these exchange programs.

Most of the webmasters who sign up for traffic exchanges are trying to use a direct sales page and consequently make no sales from the traffic they get. When you look at how these exchanges work it's not hard to see why.

After you have surfed to earn your credits, or paid for your page views with cash, your page will be shown to other people in the program. When your page is shown though, you will only get a short time to make an impact on your prospect, and many of them are going to be only scanning for something of immediate use as they will be trying to get as many views as possible to get their site seen. Many of them won't even be looking for the information your site offers either although some of the better traffic exchanges like Traffic Swarm will have categories so you can target the audience who will be most interested in your site, so these are the best ones to make use of.

So how can you make better use of the traffic from traffic exchanges?

As we already stated, the use of more targeted exchanges is a good start, so that the people seeing the pages you put up are actually interested in them to start with. That will improve the chances of action being taken in the first instance.

The second thing you can do to make people notice your site, among the hundreds they will surf during a traffic exchange session, is to be different. Many of the users of the traffic exchanges will be in the same programs and using the same pages to display. You can get more even from these same sites by making your own leads page for it.

How To Profit From 0% Interest Credit Cards

Credit cards equal debt, it's almost a universal truth. Almost.

It is possible, and is being done right now, to turn a profit from 0% credit cards.

Before we get started here are some things you need to realise before you even attempt to profit from these 0% interest credit cards.

1. It's no use making small percentage profits when you are already paying out large interest on debts elsewhere. Clear your debts first if you have any apart from a mortgage.

2. You will need to be vigilant on the 0% periods expiry, most will be 6 months, and you need to make sure you pay the money back then.

3.You need to be able to forget you have the money you borrowed on the credit card, and not dip into it for any reason.

4. You will need a good credit score from the start of this venture or it won't happen at all.

Now with those little caveats out of the way, we can get to the meat of the idea, and profit from those credit card companies.

Firstly you will need to find a credit card with a 0% interest rate for at least six months, some even offer up to nine months 0% interest. Then you need to apply for it, and wait.

You will also need either a loan or another credit card you can draw up to the limit of your 0% card on. Now here comes the science bit.

Pay the limit of the 0% credit card into a bank account by drawing it as cash or direct transfer, and immediately use the 0% card to transfer the balance to the other card to make it paid up.

The money you just got out can be placed into a high interest savings account. Leave it there until you have to pay up the 0% card at which point you will still only owe the original amount you transferred onto it. You will have made interest on the money while you had it and owe 0% interest.

If you have a real clean credit history you could even transfer the balance from another o% interest credit card to the first one, and leave the money earning interest in the savings account.
This is only meant as an informational overview, and you will need to research the credit cards and relevant laws in your own country or state. Here in the UK a few savvy people are using 0% interest credit cards to make them a nice sum, and as long as you remember the few simple rules at the beginning of this article you could too.

What My Two Year Old Taught Me About Marketing Online And Offline

What can you learn about marketing from a two year old? Quite a lot actually.

Two year olds are humans and will show you exactly how they will react to a situation without any false ideals or actions to mask their true feelings.

My own two year old responds to emotions, so I figured that so would my customers in my business. When I need her to do something, my daughter will stubbornly refuse, but I can often remind her of the fun she had last time we done it, and she will happily go along.

If you can setup a similar emotional response in your customer, they will be more likely to purchase your products. Try to remind them of something you know will bring out a positive response in most people, a time when they were young and enjoying a ball game or when they first succeeded in riding a two wheel bicycle. Relate this to your products effect on their life.

My toddler doesn't like having her hair washed, to convince her to have it done we use a bribe we know she will want to have. A sweet, or a story book usually does the trick.

Our potential customers like to think they're way beyond the antics of a two year old, but how many will resist this old marketing ploy of a free gift?

There is a potential flaw here, my daughter has learnt to try to checkout the goods being offered first before she agrees to the bribe, and your customer will need some kind of assurance that the gift is worth whatever effort you ask in return, whether it is to entice them to your site or get them to sign up to your email list.

Make your bribe more than worth the required task for your customer.

Stories draw in my little girl like nothing else (except maybe television but I digress) and her attention can be held for quite a long time by an involving tale.

But our customers won't be interested in stories right?

Wrong, by painting a picture in words of how your product came about, or why your ebook was written you will involve your potential buyer more in your copy. Making the story descriptive, and emotive will gain your customers trust, and empathy.

If they can relate the story to their own problem (perceived or real) then they will be more prone to buy.

My daughter also likes to feel special, using her name will draw a smile and a response every time. She can never ignore us when we call her name out whatever she is doing. Her attention is gained even when she hears her name on the TV and she will look around.

Yep you guessed it, using your customers name will gain their attention too. In an email subject they will pick out their own name readily among all the other subjects. Using the name within the email also develops a feeling of one on one chat and intimacy which will gain their trust. It's a little more difficult on a webpage, but can be done still, using a script to request the name and then personalise the page for the potential buyer.

As you can see my two year olds actions and reactions mirror the results we will see in all of human life, and can be used in our marketing efforts to increase our sales.

If your website is hacked, it could be used for any number of illegal activities.

A hacker could use your hosting account to send uce (Spam) from your domain or even add web pages such as user information "phishing" sites. This gives you two potential headaches, firstly loss of business while it is offline, but more importantly you may lose data. Making sure you take regular backups of all databases, and all your sites pages will help, also monitoring how often any outages occur, and how long each lasts will tell you whether it's time to change hosts.

No host can guarantee with absolute certainty 100% uptime, but some are much more prone to downtime than others. If you have all the site information backed up, moving hosts isn't as much of a task as it used to be, and can be done in quite a short time if needed. As hosting is such a cut throat business, finding a new one is also relatively simple. There are even software programs which will alert you if your site is unavailable.

Blog and Forum spamming

With the all pervasive spread of blogging it was inevitable that some people would resort to spamming them. Forums and message boards are also open to abuse from software which will autopost to thousands of sites in minutes. If your blog is able to accept comments, it is wise to ask for some kind of registration from people who wish to make comments. If you don't ask for registration you leave your blog open to blatant advertising done by software, which will be unlikely to bear any relevance to your blogs subject. This goes for your forums too, allowing guests to post without registration is open to abuse by widely available software which autoposts inane comments with a signature which contains a url to the spammers product.

Asking for registration will help ensure that only people committed to posting something relevant get to add their comments or posts. If someone wants to post they will take the time to register.

It may take a little time, but monitoring your websites could save you from a lot more wasted time in the future. Backups of your site will help and should be taken at least weekly, and all your scripts should at least have security updates as soon as they are released.

It's your site, make sure it stays in your control.

We live in a sea of information. And information overload is an increasingly common complaint. Part of the complaint arises because we get hit with different headlines that point to the same content. So we waste time on things that have no added value. Bummer.

When you email your list or put up content on your site, and assuming you want to generate loyalty, it's necessary that you have content others haven't seen a dozen times elsewhere.

If this makes sense to you, here are some ideas you can use to EASILY generate fresh content with a minimal amount of time and effort.

First of all, think about a subject in which you are interested.

Let's say it's horticulture. Now if you're not aware of it, let me put you in the picture. Most people do web searches from Google's home page and stop there. Not at all creative. Not at all digging for information from which to develop original content.

So let's go exploring...

1 - Google has lots of tools besides just web searches. They let you check the news. (http://news.google.com) As of this writing, there are 1,680 news items listed by Google on the word horticulture. Bet you could easily do a summary of some of these articles and create your own content. But let's not stop there.

2 - Google also has "groups." (http://groups.google.com/) These are folks who like to discuss *your* subject. So now you can go even farther. Look up horticulture in their groups. Now this information is potentially gold. Why? Because you can see what it is about horticulture that lots of folks are interested in.

Think you might be able to do a little research and come up with a free or even a for-profit report that gives them what they want?

Check out Google's other tools, too. You can even get research info from universities through Google. Start here: http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/

3 - Next method: Do this search (keeping in the punctuation as written):

As of this writing, Google shows 196,000 hits for this query. What you get here are free downloads in pdf format about your subject.

Now you can't simply copy and use it as your own information. You have to create your writing in your own words. But there's no law that says you can't summarize what you find in other people's works. To make the point, you could even call your work something like: "Survey Report: Latest from the Horticulture Front!"

4 - Go to http://Alexa.com. Do a search on your subject, in this example, horticulture. It provides the exact same results as Google because it's powered by Google. So why bother, right? Wrong. Because Alexa *does* provide value added information.

When you do the search, you don't want to click the link that takes you to the listed site. Instead you want to follow the link that says "Site info." When you do this, you'll find a section called: "People who visit this page also visit." This can be very valuable because it potentially shows *what the marketplace is interested in.* This can enable you to tailor your information product to what people want.

These are just some of the easy ways to branch out your explorations and find gold to weave into golden braids.

The beauty of the Internet is the inherent open nature of competition. It is so open, you can check indexes when analyzing the competition to improve your site.

A key step to any search engine optimization effort is to analyze the competition. The simplest way to do this is to simply go to their site and look at the code. Most browsers let you do this by clicking the “view” tab and then selecting “source.”

You competition isn’t stupid. Many sites will bar browsers from showing source code using the above technique. If your competition takes this step, is there anything you can do? Yes, there is.

Indexes

Almost everyone knows how to check if their site is indexed in a search engine. Simply go to the engine and search for “site:yourdomainname.” This technique can also be used to see what your competition is up to.

If you want to see a glimpse of how a competitor is pursuing search engine optimization, check how many pages are indexed in the relevant search engine. Do a search for “site:competitorsdomainname.” You’ll be presented with a list of their pages, the meta title and meta description. This works particularly well with Google.

The resulting list of pages can be analyzed in a couple of different ways. First, you can isolate the particular keywords being pursued by the site. These should then be compared to your site to ascertain whether you’re missing anything. You almost always are missing a key niche. Second, you can analyze the meta description to see both the layout and particular formation of sentences and keyword placement they are pursuing. Again, compare it to yours. Using this process, you can get an idea of how your efforts differ from a competitor.

Importantly, this approach should not be overvalued. It is only a glimpse of the competitor’s site, not a thorough review. It will tell you nothing about how pages are arranged, keyword density approaches and so on. You’ll have to hunt and peck around the site for that information. Still, the meta information gained from this approach makes it worth a go if you are shut out from the code of a site.

Search Engines - Getting Indexed

Before you can even consider getting high rankings in Google, Yahoo and MSN, you have to get indexed by the search engines. Here’s how you do it for free.

Submitting?

Getting indexed is relatively easy, far more so than it used to be in the past. It is so easy that I am surprised I still get spam with submission offers.

Each of the big three search engines has a page where you can submit your site. The only one worth using is on MSN. Google and Yahoo take for every to get around to manual submissions, and there are far easier ways of getting into them. To find the MSN submission page, just search for “submit MSN.”

Google

Google has really gone to great lengths to help you get indexed. If you are updating your site frequently, you should use the Google Sitemaps tool. The tool is free and gives Google a direct path for visiting your site on a regular basis. If you don’t update that frequently, there is an even easier method for getting indexed.

For Google, the simplest method is to go to blogger.com and start a blog for your site. This blog platform is free. Just start writing about anything you wish. Within your ramblings, create links to pages on your sites. Since Google owns blogger.com, it will check the site every few days and follow the links to your site. Once on your site, Google is pretty good about indexing as many pages as possible.

Yahoo

The company tries to make money by charging you to be listed in the Yahoo directory, a companion section to its search engine. Depending on the type of site, this can run a couple hundred dollars a year with no guarantee of even being ranked! Many sites bypass this process by trading links with sites already in the Yahoo directory. Yahoo then follows said links to your site and indexes it. The beauty of this approach, of course, is no money comes out of your pocket.

Showing no shame, Yahoo has recently moved to turn its search engine into one giant pay-per-click engine. This new program is called “SiteMatch” and has met with a ton of controversy. Essentially, Yahoo wants you to pay to submit each url of your site, with prices ranging from $49 for the first one to $29 and $15 for subsequent sub-domains depending on the number of listings. As if that weren’t bad enough, Yahoo also is demanding that you pay for each hit these pages get from organic listings! The cost per click is either 30 or 15 cents depending on the type of site. In my humble opinion, this is a disgraceful move by Yahoo, and I refuse to be held up. You can make your own choice.

An alternative way to get listed in Yahoo is to turn your blog into a news feed. You’ll need a free email account with Yahoo. Take the blog you created for Google and go to a free feed converter site like Feed Burner. Convert your blog into a news feed using the free service. This may sound complex, but it is exceedingly simple once you are on the site.

When the site kicks out your feed domain, add it to the My Yahoo page associated with your free Yahoo email account. Just go to the My Yahoo page and click the “add content” button in the top left. Enter your feed domain where indicated on the page that appears.

Next, go to a site like PingOMatic and ping the various blog listing sites out there. My Yahoo is one such site. Eventually, Yahoo will read the My Yahoo listings and follow the links in the blog to your site. This doesn’t work as well as it used to, but it beats paying the SiteMatch fees.

MSN

MSN is very good about hunting down sites. If it hasn’t found yours, just go to the submit site page mentioned in the “Submitting?” paragraph at the beginning of this article. Enter a url and MSN will crawl it within a week or two.

Getting indexed in Google and MSN is fairly easy if you follow these steps. As to Yahoo, you’ll have to evaluate whether you want to be part of the shenanigans.

Search Engines – Pieces Of The Pie

Advertisers and search engine optimization campaigns are focused on getting the most bang for the buck. To organize your effort, you need to know which search engines have the biggest pieces of the traffic pie.

Subjective Numbers

Ask anyone in the Internet game and they will definitively tell you which search engine is the best. Of course, this often correlates to the actual search engine they use. I once had a person present me with a long winded, yet passionate, diatribe about why AllTheWeb.com was better than Google, MSN and…Yahoo! If I only had a brain, I would surely see that AllTheWeb.com would become the dominant search engine. This I was told with great conviction and more than a few people nodded their heads around us.

Since I was in a particularly bad mood that evening, I hipped the person into the fact that Yahoo provides all the search results on AllTheWeb.com! I even had to pull the site up and show my “teacher” the truth of the matter. So much for making friends!

Many people fall in love with a particular search engine, which is fine. I do it myself. That doesn’t mean the search engine in question is the biggest, baddest or best! Subjective views are, well, subjective. Follow them in lieu of objective facts and you run the risk of making huge mistakes.

Objective Numbers

There are two types of results you can look at when calculating search engine traffic percentages. The first represents the total traffic covered by a search engine across all sites it provides results to. The second, which we cover here, refers to only the percentage of searches actually on the engine itself. For instance, Google provides results for AOL. In these figures, the AOL searches are NOT included in Google’s totals.

For the first half of 2005, the objective numbers were:

1. Google: 47 percent

2. Yahoo: 22 percent

3. MSN: 12 percent

4. AOL: 5 percent

5. Others: 14 percent

Short, sweet and to the point. Google is clearly eating the biggest piece of the pie. If Google buys AOL, it will grow even more. Conversely, if MSN buys AOL, it will move closer to Yahoo.

When it comes to your marketing, Google is clearly the beast you should focus on. It controls more traffic than Yahoo and MSN combined.

Search Engine Database – Are You Indexed?

The vernacular is “build a site and they will come.” This cliché is only true if your site is indexed in the relevant search engine database.

Indexing

Search engines are essentially massive databases of domains and sub-domains for sites. When a person searches for something, the search engine instantaneously searches the domain names to come up with relevant listings. The method for doing this differs by engine and involves factors beyond the scope of this article. Instead, we are going to focus on figuring out if your site is in these important databases.

If you want to be included in the rankings on a search engine, your domain name has to be in the search engine database. Put another way, you have to buy a ticket if you want to win the lotto. Your chances of getting free traffic from rankings are far better if you have as many urls from your site included in the database as possible. Having just your home page indexed isn’t going to cut it.

If your site has 500 total pages, you ideally want 500 urls included in the search engine index. While this is admittedly a simplification of the situation, the more pages included, the better chance you have of getting high rankings under different keywords. The more high rankings you produce, the more free traffic you can get and the easier it will be to survive the loss of one ranking.

To check how many pages of your site are indexed in a particular search engine, simply do a search on the particular engine for “site:yourdomainname.com”. Pay particular attention to Yahoo, as it often will fail to pick up many of your pages. The result of this search will tell you every page the engine has found on your site and included in its database.

If you discover only a few pages have been indexed by the search engine, you need to take a look at your site. A common problem for sites using databases concerns dynamic urls. Many programmers will write session ids and so on into the urls. The search engines have massive problems reading these urls and will often fail to include them in their databases. You have this problem if the internal pages of your site have tails like:

“yourdomainname/id43/s-876783/product=46830

If you have this problem, the best solution is to create static pages without the dynamic urls issues. The session ids and so on should be moved into the code of the page and removed from the url. You will probably need a programmer to make the fix.

If you do not have this problem, you need to figure out how to get your site into the indexes. There are plenty of articles telling you how. The first step, however, is just figuring out if the search engines have found you.

How Good Is Your Blog? Here’s A Free Way To Test It

Ever wondered what people think when they visit your blog? If you’re like most bloggers, you get a few comments but not enough to know whether most people like your blog or not. Maybe they read it, love it, and you never know about it. Or maybe they see something they don’t like and are off browsing before you have time to shout “hey, there’s good stuff here!”

To make matters a little worse, what turns people away is often a small thing. It might be a bad color scheme or the lack of a clear title so people know what they’re reading about. It might be too much text and not enough pictures. Whatever it is, you can lose readers fast.

How do you solve this problem? Simple – just test your blog. And there’s an easy way and a free way to do it. Just visit the BlogExplosion site (http://www.blogexplosion), sign up for a free account, and add your blog. Then visit a feature of the site called “Battle of the Blogs.” It’s a free game where your blog competes against someone else’s. Just choose a challenger and click on “Accept Challenge.” Now, the fun part starts.

Members will visit your blog and the blog of the challenger. Then they’ll vote on their favorite blog. The battle normally only takes 15 minutes or so to be completed. As soon as it’s over, you have a clear idea of how many people like your blog. If 15 out of 15 vote for yours, don’t change a thing. If 10 out of 15 vote for yours, make some improvements. If 0 out of 15 vote for yours, make some big changes.

Then go back and enter a few battles after you’ve made changes. That’s a good way to constantly improve. And there’s nothing better than improving your blog and being able to see the results in less than 15 minutes. That’s got to be better than waiting days to see a difference in your visitor statistics.

And while you’re waiting the 15 minutes to see the results, review the other blogs battling and vote for your favorite. As you do, think about what makes you like a blog instantly or dislike a blog instantly. What catches your attention? What is it that makes one blog likeable and another one boring? Take note and you’ll figure out even more ways to improve your own blog.

Get Real-time Adsense Channel Stats And Find Out Which Ads Are Being Clicked

If you have multiple sites or multiple directories in your
site for different subjects and you have placed Adsense
codes in your site, I am sure you would like to know:
(a) from which site or directory you are earning the
most / least, (b) which Adsense ads are being
clicked and (c) from which page?

CREATE CHANNELS FOR EACH SITE

To get separate stats for each site / section / directory
/ page with Adsense, you need to create channels for
each one. Create a channel with a relevant name and
generate a code for that channel. Paste that particular
Adsense code to the concerned pages / sites.

GET CHANNEL STATS IN REAL TIME

Google now provides Channel Data in real time. Earlier, it
used to provide data for '2 days before'. Follow the
procedure mentioned below :

1. From 'Date Range' drop down menu, select 'today'.

2. Check the radio button : Group data by 'Channel'.

3. On the right hand panel, check the radio button 'Channel
data'.

4. Click on 'Select ALL' at the bottom of channel list.

5. Click on 'Display Report'.

Now you get the seggregated report for clicks generated for
each channel.

WHICH ADS ARE BEING CLICKED AND
FROM WHICH PAGE?

It is very important to know that which pages / sites are
generating good Adsense revenue and which are not. We can
work upon those poorly performing pages. If we can get to
know about which ads are being clicked, that would make us
feel more informed for many obvious reasons.

Currently Google does not provide this data. But you can still
get it from a very nice and detailed free web stat service, Add
Free Stats.

Add Free Stats provides a very detailed web stats which
satisfies most webmasters. You may open a free account at :
http://www5.addfreestats.com, get the code and paste it at the
bottom of each of your pages.

Make sure that in 'Your Account' section you mark 'Yes' for
'Exit link tracking'.

Now check your stats at Add Free Stats, and you will find a
"A" icon beside the visitors' ip. That means that visitor has
clicked on an Adsense code. Place your mouse over the icon,
and you can see which ad has been clicked.

You can also generate a separate report of pages that have
generated Adsense click. Select 'Exit Links/Adsense' from the
drop down menu marked as 'Pages'. Here you get a folder icon
named Adsense, the number of Adsense clicks etc. Click on
the Adsense folder icon and you get the number of Adsense
clicks on each page and which ads are clicked on that page.
Click on the 'hour glass' icon and you get the CTR, PV too
for each page.

I am no way connected to Add Free Stats. I am just a happy
user. Any webmaster working seriously towards Adsense
earning, must have this tool.

How To Pick A Great MLM Company

Chances are if you’re reading this article you are interested in MLM, or network marketing. With the growth of the internet, and people looking to earn some extra money from home, the appeal of an MLM side business has grown over the last decade. Think how convenient it is, you can do it from home in your spare time, you probably already have all the tools you need (e.g.: computer, fax, internet), and you don’t have to hire any employees, pay a franchise fee, or even stockpile merchandise anymore.

With this growth in interest in network marketing, many new companies have sprung up to join the ranks of the time-tested, older MLM companies. If you’re thinking of starting a side career in MLM, or want to see how your current company measures up, read on for the critical things to look for when choosing an MLM company.

The first thing to look for is stability. At a minimum, it would be best if the company has been in business for 2 to 5 years. It might be cliché, but there is something to be said for ‘standing the test of time’. The longer a company has been around, the more chance of it staying around. There are enough things to worry about in network marketing, such as sponsoring and advertising, without having to wonder if your company will be around next year. Even if you’re able to build the biggest downline and become the highest earner in the company, it won’t matter if they shut down. There are never any guarantees, but a company with a longer track record generally has more chances of longevity.

Who’s in charge of the company? Who is the president, and who are the directors? What is their track record? Have they spent time in the network marketing industry, or are they new to it all? What businesses have they been involved with in the past? If you don’t know the answer to these questions, call or email the company to find out. It is critical to know the answers to these questions from the outset. If you plan to spend many years with this company, you want to be dealing with people who are honest, savvy, and have integrity in and outside of the business world.

Does the company have one sizzle product, or many products? Generally speaking, the more products the better. The less products you have, the more chance your prospects or potential customers might not be interested. If you’re only selling vitamins, and Mary already buys her vitamins from the drugstore, what else do you have to offer her? If you’re only selling a juice, and Joe doesn’t like the taste of it, what else do you have to offer him? There was one MLM telecommunications company that recently went bankrupt. They basically only had a few products in the telco industry. Perhaps if they had added some nutritional products as well they could have survived. In addition, the products should be competitively priced, and somewhat unique.

How easy is it to get started in your company? Can people join online, or do they have to fill out paper forms? Having the option to join online makes the whole process a lot easier. Can a prospect join for free to start, or do they have to place an order when they join? Having the option to join free will open up your opportunity to many more people. Your company should let people join free and allow them to market the products to earn income. Once someone has joined free, they have partially committed to the business, and it makes it easier for you and your company to follow up with them, via mail or email.

One of the biggest barriers for people entering network marketing is the monthly purchase. Many people aren’t sales types, so they usually need to meet their monthly sales quota (at least partially) through a personal purchase to remain qualified for commissions. I can tell you from experience that people will stay around longer if they only need to spend $50 or less per month. I have seen companies that require $150 per month in volume for members to stay qualified, and if those people aren’t making money quickly, they will quit. How much volume do you need to do for your company to stay qualified?

The more automated the company is, the better. They should give you a personal company website that you can refer prospects to. A prospect should be able to contact you from that page, and the company should have a series of emails that follow up with your prospects. You should also have a company product website that you can advertise and send customers to. They need to have an online back office where members can log in and check their stats in real time. You should be able to see hits to your web pages, your downline, your commissions, your monthly order, company information, and so on.

If your company has all of the above, then congratulations, you have most likely associated with a winner and have greatly increased your chances for success in network marketing!

These days, it seems like everyone wants to work from home and make money on the Internet. But before you even turn on your computer, the first question you have to ask yourself is whether you’re cut out for this kind of work.

For me, what happened was creating a successful, self-running Internet marketing system. It didn’t happen without effort. It didn’t happen without at least some initial investment of both time and money and, of course, it doesn’t happen now without me making sure that the taxes are filed and the paperwork is done. But it happened.

I’m my own boss. I work from home according to my own schedule and I get to pocket all the cash my business makes. If you’re prepared to give an e-business the time, the work and the money it needs to get started and get growing, it can happen for you too.

Why Should You Use Google Ads On Your Website?

If you are interested in earning income from your website, should you consider using the Google AdSense program to place targeted ads on your web pages? When I first considered this idea, I wasn’t sure if it was right for me. You see, I have a number of websites that promote affiliate links to products and services in my market. I felt that if I put Google ads on my pages they would compete with my affiliate sales. Sure, I knew you got paid when visitors clicked on these ads, but could it be a significant amount? Eventually, I saw that many other top marketers were using these ads on their pages. So I decided to dive in and give it a try, and after a year of using these ads here is what I can tell you.

The first thing I noticed was the ease of use in using Google AdSense. Once you have joined the program for free, you can start creating your ad codes. And the neat thing is, you can customize the ads to your web pages. You can choose the color of the ads so that they match the color theme of your pages. You can choose from many different size ad blocks. For example, they have 468x60 regular banner size and 120x600 towers. This way, you can choose the size that is right for your page. Once you have made your selection, you simply cut and paste the html and place it where you want on your page, and your part is done!

You can track your ads with ‘channels’. Let’s say your website has 10 pages. You can give each page it’s own channel so that when you log in to check your ad stats, you will see how many ad views and clicks you are getting on each page. This is helpful because it shows you where your ad revenue is coming from.

I haven’t really noticed any competition with my other affiliate programs! I’ve realized that Google ads don’t compete with my website, they are an additional income stream. My sales and sign-ups didn’t plummet once I started using the ads. What I believe now is that a certain percentage of visitors aren’t going to convert into customers, so the ads are simply another way to generate revenue from visitors who weren’t going to be customers anyway. As long as your own offers are well laid out on your site, if a visitor is interested in what you have they will still become a customer.

A good thing about Google ads is that they are ‘targeted’. This means that the ad content normally matches the content of your site. For example, if your site is about Boston terrier dogs, you will mostly get ads about Boston terrier dogs, or at least dogs. I can’t explain how they do it, but the ad html you post on your site picks up the keywords on your pages, and ads are generated that match the site keywords. This is good because the ads will match the target market for your website. And since the ads rotate on their own, it gives you 'fresh' content.

Another bonus is that you are associating with a trusted source in Google. They are presently the number one search engine, which means that people know them and trust them. Having their presence on your website will therefore not lose you credibility.

Yes, but how much can I make, you ask! That depends on how much traffic your website gets, and the subject matter of your website. Generally, the more visitors your website gets, the more clicks you will receive on the ads. Since you get paid per click, your earnings go up with more clicks. Secondly, the subject matter of your site plays a large part. Advertisers have to bid on the keywords for their ads, and the bids generally go higher if there are more advertisers bidding on the same keywords. Likewise, subjects that deal with highly profitable industries, like loans, mortgages, and home business, tend to get higher bids. The higher the bids, the more you get paid for click. To sum up, if your website deals with popular subject matter in a profitable field, and you get steady traffic, you should do well.

In closing, if you decide to join the Google AdSense program, make sure you read their terms of service so that you follow all the rules. They have recently added some extra features to allow members to earn more, such as paying for referrals and toolbar downloads. The growth in online advertising keeps getting bigger and bigger with no signs of stopping. The AdSense program is an excellent way for you to benefit from this and earn an extra revenue stream from your website. I highly recommend it!

There has been much debate on which factors are the most important when determining what domain to purchase. Choosing a domain name should be deeply tied to the business plan and the vision of the company. A company who sells red widgets would benefit from acquiring red-widgets.com and redwidgets.com , because it is natural that people will remember such address, but most importantly, that domain name has a high probability of ranking at, or very near to, the top of a search for ‘red widgets’. Brand Domains

When coming from the offline business into the online, the obvious choice for brand domains is the offline brand name as .com and/or .country extension. Country extensions are used in countries were there is more popularity in their country extension than on the .com. In the case that no previous brand existed before moving online, one most be very creative into the approach of a brandable name. At this point, there are millions of domain names registered and many times, one finds that the desired domain is taken. There is a consensus among most Internet domain experts that the shorter the domain, the better. A domain that is about 5 letters long is highly desirable for a brand. However, the domain must sound right as well. Xyqpt.com would be undesirable, because it cannot be easily said or remembered to the general public.

General Term Domains

In the height of the Internet Bubble, general term domains were the most popular choice. Many companies failed, even though they had the generic word for their market. Companies like TheKnot.com refused to purchase Weddings.com, because they were conscious that they needed to focus on brand. Although this strategy worked for TheKnot.com, generic words have a value of their own that cannot be ignored. Like Search Engine Placement Domains, which attract a large number of visitors through search engine referrals, so do generic word domains. For this reason, generic word names are still very much desired and their value continue to rise. What should be learned about the Dot Com Bubble is that generic domains are not everything in a dot com business, rather they are a valuable (yet, not essential) component in an array of variables that make an Internet business a success. The first thing to keep in mind when designing your website, is “surfability”. Take a few minutes a look around at several web pages. What makes them appealing? Were there some that you closed out of immediately? Why? Take notes and do your research. Keep in mind that when a person visits your site they have a goal in mind. They are either seeking information or shopping for a product. Give the person what they want without having to search for it. Be sure that all the information on your site is relevant to your product. Make the buyer think that they need your product to solve their problem.

Content is the life blood of the Internet every webmaster needs it and every website needs fresh content to keep Google and the other Search engines coming back regularly. By writing articles you can provide this content and at the same time get yourself permanent backlinks to your website. This article will attempt to answer some common questions asked by first time article writers.

What should I write about?

Write about what you know and make it relevant to the content of your website this will ensure that the links back to your site are also relevant and enhance the links value in the search engines.

How do webmasters find my articles?

Once you have written your article you submit it to Article Listing websites. These website provide a categorized list of articles that are free to use on websites as long as certain conditions are adhered to. One of these conditions is that all links must be live. When you submit your article you add a short biography and a link to your site in the resource box.

Won’t people just remove the links?

That is a matter of personal choice some people believe that you should submit them to as many as possible, personally I only submit to 2 or 3 sites with a Google PR of 3 and above. My personal belief is that this keeps the articles unique enough to benefit any webmasters who use the articles.

How many Articles should I write?

The more you write the better If 1 article a week gets you an extra 50 links then imagine the links you’ll get if you write one article a day. I usually try to write 1 article before breakfast everyday.

No it’s not, you need a firm business plan and you need to work hard at it.

Setting up and running an online business does have several advantages over setting up a “normal” business. You can usually run it in conjunction with your current job, your potential market is bigger your initial overheads are usually smaller and you can operate it from the comfort of your own home. Once you decided that you want to enter into the world of E-commerce you then need to take a lesson from main stream business and create a business plan.

When a person clicks on an advert you then receive a few cents. There are 2 approaches to Adsense programs, build a well respected Niche site with lots of traffic the more traffic you get the higher the Click Through Rate (CTR) and thus the higher the income. The second method is sometimes referred to as the shotgun method, build lots of sites with less traffic but earning a smaller amount from each site. A $1 a day income from each of 50 sites is better than $40 from 1 site. It is worth pointing out here that it against Google’s TOS to build site specifically to target Adsense revenue.

The final E-commerce method we will look at is the most similar to mainstream business, selling a product. You build a web site with a shopping cart and give as many details about the products as possible. The products can be something you make yourself, or a product you buy in bulk or a product from a drop shipper. With drop shipping you sell products which are then dispatched from a location elsewhere by a 3rd party.

If all this sounds too easy it’s not. Setting up the business is just the start of it, the hard work needs to start now. You need to get traffic, the more traffic you get the higher your sales will be. In addition you need to look at the performance of your site and tweak the layout so you make more sales. You need to get your site onto the first page of Google and other search engines. You may need to write adverts and operate an pay Per Click program. In short you need to become an expert in many new subjects. If you have the drive and dedication then it is possible to make a good income from E-commerce but don’t expect to spend an hour a day at the computer and the rest of your time on your Yacht.

What is weird?, well in the 21st century it’s getting more and more difficult to define what is weird and what isn’t. According to the dictionary one definition is “Of a strikingly odd or unusual character; strange”. Surely that isn’t enough any more? A quick look at eBay and you will find hundreds of items that would comply with that definition. Toast with faces on it, Glass jars containing Ghosts and numerous examples of weird and wacky objects, (well weird and wacky according to the people who have submitted them.) The sheer number of them should preclude them from being classed as Weird. Mainstream Newspapers now have pages of weird news and no shortage of people willing to appear on them. The nightly news no longer finishes with heart warming local story it finishes with some weird local happening Weird is big news.

It seems that weird and bizarre are now mainstream and are considered marketing tools or a gateway to 15 minutes of fame. In earlier centuries the highlight of the year was the visit of a circus or a fair and their cast of weird and wonderful characters and creatures. Queues would form outside the tents as people waited to see the latest freaks and bizarre sights. The Internet is the modern equivalent of the Freak Show and with a bit of planning and preparation you can use this desire for the weird and wacky to promote your site or your company.

Viral marketing is the key to your success, Find something that people will find funny and amusing and want to show their friends and you are halfway there. Some recent examples are the plumbers van that had a naked body painted on door so that it looked like a naked person was driving. The photograph traveled from inbox to inbox each time the name of the company was seen along with the URL of their site , it was picked up by local newspapers and local TV and the work flooded in (sorry for the pun!).

It doesn’t take a big budget just a big imagination, Find something weird, photograph it watermark the photograph and place it on your site take some anti leeching precautions to stop people copying it and send the link out, visit a few forums and place the link in your signature, pass the photo to some of the many sites specializing in weird soon you will have a stream of traffic to your site.

There is no difference from the Internet to the freak shows of the 19th and 20th Centuries except that this time the freaks are on the outside of the tent!

Adsense & Adwords: A Beginners Guide

First a brief glossary of terms:

Adwords: The program advertisers use to make their adverts.

Adsense: The program Website owners use to display the adverts

CTR: Click Through Rate (the number of page impressions/the number of clicks on a advert)

The most effective methods of advertising on the internet are Google's Adwords program and Overture which is now officially called Yahoo Search Marketing but still universally known as Overture. This method of advertising is called Pay per Click or PPC. The concept is incredibly simple; Google and Yahoo provide listings on a Per bid basis. You bid a certain amount of money for your specific keywords when someone types in a keyword and you have the highest bid then your advert shows up. On Google the adverts show up in the Adwords column on the right hand side of the page whilst Yahoo shows them as sponsored links at the top of the page. If someone then clicks on your advert, they arrive at your web site and you are charged the amount you bid. So, for example if you bid $.10 per click on 'widgets', and that's the highest bid, you'll show up at the top if It's the second highest bid you'll show up second etc. If 100 people click on your advert, then the search engine or PPC service will charge you $10.00.

Using Adwords to your Advantage

So now that you know how Adwords work you can use this to your advantage when building websites. If you build a site about a specific subject you can then use specific keywords to attract adverts. The best way to ascertain which keywords to use are by signing up for an Adwords account you will then have access to Google’s Adwords tools which will show you which keywords are highest paying for a particular subject. In addition it will suggest alternative keywords.

At this point it is probably wise to point out it is against Google’s Terms of Service to specifically create a page just to target Adsense, Obviously if the site has lots of unique content then you are entitles to tweak the keywords to maximize your revenue.

Making Adsense pay

There is very little point adding Adsense to a page with no traffic. It is best to build your site and spend a couple of months driving traffic to the site, once you have a regular amount of people being driven to your site by the search engines then it is time to add Adsense. It is not just a case of putting Adsense on your site and waiting for the money to roll in. You should place the adverts carefully to maximize exposure whilst not impacting on the browsing experience of your viewers. Leave the Ads in position for a week or 2 and monitor the performance known as CTR. The change the position of the ads and the color and monitor this for any improvements. Publishers have been known to improve their CTR by up to 4 times by employing small changes. So time spent tweaking Adsense is time well spent.

I Earn $250 A Day Through Google Adsense And So Can You

How would you like to increase your monthly website revenue by 25% with only a few hours of work? What if I said that it wouldn’t cost you a dime? It’s hard to believe isn’t it?

I know this claim sounds as though I should be pitching a $200 get-rich-quick scheme in the next couple of paragraphs, but I’m not. The technique I used was free to me, and I’m sharing this information with you free of charge because I’m more excited about this discovery than I can put into words.

What did I do to achieve this jump in revenue? I placed Google Adsense advertising boxes on my website, and in just the first seven days, I generated over $1700 in Adsense revenue. Even better, I didn’t have any decrease in sales from the original source of revenue for these sites – paid memberships to my wholesale information directory.

I’ve known about Adsense for years, but I always thought that it was a system best used by free informational websites needing to generate revenue. My reasoning behind this was that I thought that these ads could possibly bleed traffic from my site and steal potential paying customers. I’m happy to say that I was wrong, and I only wish I would have tested this program earlier to discover how wrong I was.

I am completely surprised by how well these advertisements have paid. It’s a very simple system that is easy for anyone to implement. All you need is:

1. A website with quality content
2. An existing traffic source, be it 100 visits a day or 100,000+ visits a day.
3. The ability to read the Google Adsense Program Policies
4. Free page real estate, hopefully in a conspicuous place above the fold

It is that simple; however I cannot stress enough that you read the Google Adsense Program Policies. There are certain types of sites, certain types of pages, and certain types of advertising on and through which Adsense will not allow their ads to be associated. It is each advertiser’s responsibility to know their guidelines and avoid breaking any rule that could put their account and an excellent source of revenue in jeopardy.

Finally, let me stress that these ads should be placed in a conspicuous place. Visit the site linked in the “About the Author” section below for examples. No matter how effectively your site is designed, more people will leave a page without reading below the fold than will continue on to the bottom of the page. For that reason, as you’ll see in my site, I place the ads at the top right of my page, in an area where any visitor to my site can find them.

Adsense is an excellent source of revenue for any website owner. Don’t waste time like I did. Place some ads on your site, and I’m sure you’ll be pleased with the results.

As an AdSense sponsoring web site, your goal is to have contextually relevant ads displayed whenever a visitor comes to your site. That’s the goal, and it sounds simple enough, but sometimes it seems that Google is bent on not cooperating with you in the least.

If there are times when your web site is displaying apparently random ads which have no relevance to your site at all or worse, it’s displaying non-revenue Public Service Ads (PSA), then that’s a sign that you need to work harder to help Google make up its mind.

Google uses a pretty effective set of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to sniff the content on your site so it can serve up the most relevant ads out of its extensive inventory. However, since no humans are involved in this process, it’s actually pretty easy to lead the poor spider down the wrong path.

It’s not enough to simply depend upon your site’s keywords to pull the right ads from Google; you have to pay attention to the context in which the key words are used as well or you could get some surprises.

For example, suppose that you have some text on your page that reads “I love Guns ‘N Roses”. There is a good chance that you will either end up with PSAs, because “Guns” is a known Google “stop” word that triggers PSAs, or ads from 1-800-Flowers thanks to the key word “Roses”. But if you modify your content slightly to have it read something like “I love the heavy metal and hard rock bands like Guns ‘N Roses”, then you should start pulling ads that match your site’s theme.

The words “heavy metal” and “hard rock” are called supporting keywords. Their job is to help define the context that the actual key word is being used in.

When the Google spiders are fed both supporting and actual key words they are better able to make the right decisions on your behalf.

The position of your key words also plays a part in pulling the right ads. Words that are closer to the top of the page have more “weight” than those that appear farther down. Tags are also important. <> and <> tags have a higher precedence over <> tags, and <> tags are significant as well.

The key to getting the right ads to appear on your site is to fine-tune the supporting key words and tweak your tags until you are seeing what you want to see.

If you have a blog, or are thinking about starting a blog, then you are definitely going to want to read this article. It’s all about how to line your pockets with money that’s just waiting to be made without working much harder than you already are.

No only are blogs the hottest thing on the ‘net right now, but they are custom-made for Google’s AdSense program. Why? It’s simple. Blogs represent constantly changing and fresh content to Google’s search engine spiders. Feeding fresh content to those little spiders is just like tossing raw meat to a tiger. They just gobble it up. The more pages of your blog that get indexed, the more traffic you get. And the more traffic you get, the more exposure your AdSense ads get. Are you beginning to see where I’m heading here?

It’s not just Google that loves new content, all of the major engines do. In fact, some web-savvy bloggers are testing Google ads on one page and Overture ads on the other.
